Mid-Career Fellowships in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) enable an individual to obtain postdoctoral experience with the view to establishing a research career in Australia or New Zealand. Fellowships are awarded for a one-term, four year period, the final two years of which will normally be spent in the Fellow’s host institution and the first two years spent in an alternative institution in either Australia, New Zealand or overseas.
This Award was previously known as the Research Fellowship.
Term of award
Up to four (4) years.
Scientists or fully qualified physicians or surgeons looking to establish their post-doctoral research career in Australia or New Zealand. Current holders of a similar career development fellowship are ineligible, as are Applicants who have previously held and been funded for a GPRWMF Mid-Career Fellowship or Research Fellowship. Applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand.
The annual level of support will be in the NHMRC Career Development Fellowship Level 1 range (or equivalent in New Zealand). For the Australian/New Zealand components, a maintenance allowance of AUD 15,000 per annum will be provided. If there is an overseas component, additional support towards minimum cost airfares will be provided (as per Terms and Conditions) as well as a living allowance of AUD 25,000 per annum.
How to apply
Applications are open during July and August for awards commencing the following year, with outcomes being communicated in December. Applications must be submitted online via the GPRWMF Portal, which can be accessed through this website. Please note that this Award may not be offered every year. Awards on offer will be announced on the GPRWMF website in mid-June.
Full submission requirements are made available when the application round opens.

- An up-to-date CV, including current grants and applications pending or to be submitted within the year
- A proposed institution, intended Head of Department(s) and intended Supervisor(s) for both components of the Fellowship
- References (instructions provided in the application form)
- A concise summary and the aims of the proposed research project.

Applications open annually between early July and late August, with outcomes being announced in December.
Exceptions to this are: 1. Academic Surgeon-Scientist Research Scholarship: supervisors are announced on the Foundation website in February, with applications being aligned with the SET application process. 2.
