Dr Katharina Richter – a post-doctoral researcher working in the field of ENT – is the winner of the Fresh Science (South Australia) award for her work on elimination of superbugs. Katharina has already demonstrated in animal models the effectiveness of first starving the antibiotic-resistant bacteria of iron and subsequently poisoning them through their preferred food source. First in human clinical trials are now underway at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide.
Dr Richter’s research was performed in the laboratory of Professor PJ Wormald. Fresh Science is a national program that helps early-career researchers find and share their stories of discovery.
