Mardi Gammon
Mardi Gammon completed her Bachelor of Science in 2023 at The University of Melbourne, majoring in Human Structure and Function, for which she received the Dean’s Honours List Award. She undertook an undergraduate research project exploring the anatomical relationship between the human pudendal nerve and associated vasculature, which sparked her passion for research. Mardi completed her honours degree in 2024 at the Bionics Institute, attaining First Class Honours. Her project focused on developing a novel drug therapy to repair damaged cochlear synapses using an in vitro model of cochlear synaptopathy. Mardi presented her findings at the 2024 Australasian Auditory Neuroscience Workshop, for which she was awarded Best Student Presentation. Mardi worked at the University of Melbourne Anatomy Laboratories, where she demonstrated at workshops for undergraduate auditory neuroscience students.
Mardi is commencing her PhD through the University of Melbourne, under the supervision of A/Prof Andrew Wise at the Bionics Institute. With generous support from the Passe & Williams Foundation, Mardi’s PhD will build upon her previous research and investigate the effects of the novel drug therapy on functional hearing outcomes in preclinical models of hearing loss. This research will support the development of a potential world-first drug therapy for hearing loss.
