Dr. Sharon Clark

Dr. Sharon Clark (BBiomedSc, PhD) is an early-career researcher specialising in the microbiology and immunology of chronic bacterial respiratory diseases, including ear (otitis media) and lung infections. She completed her PhD in 2024 at the University of Western Australia, where she discovered that children with chronic and recurrent otitis media have reduced immune responses to nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) biofilm proteins, identifying new targets for treatments and preventatives.

As part of the Bacterial Respiratory Infectious Disease Group at The Kids Research Institute Australia, Dr. Clark applies her expertise in microbiology, immunology, and biofilm biology to advance strategies for improved treatment and prevention of respiratory diseases. Supported by the Passe & Williams Foundation, her research focuses on understanding immune networks that contribute to poor immune responses and biofilm persistence, informing future vaccine development. Her goal is to help ensure that no child suffers from chronic or recurrent ear infections, reducing associated health and educational disadvantages.
