Dr. Akila Wijesekera

Dr. Akila Wijesekera

Dr. Akila Wijesekera is an Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery trainee in Queensland. He completed his primary medial degree at Bond University in 2019.

Akila is currently pursuing his PhD at the Griffith University with the support of the Surgeon-Scientist program under A/Prof. Sarju Vasani, Prof. Chamindie Puynadeera and Dr. Chameera Weeramange. His project is focused on identifying the cohort of people that are at highest risk of contracting oral human papillomavirus (HPV) and subsequently developing a cancer from this, with the long term goal of being able to develop a screening program for HPV related throat cancer.
